The Honeymoon:
A week of paradise. Couples should be required to take one every year. They're fantastic.
destination: Key Largo, FL
dates: August 7 - August 15

The honeymoon started at my favorite hotel, The Bedford Village Inn. My mom waited until after the ceremony to tell me that they had managed to get “the cottage” for the evening (we’d checked for openings since the beginning of May and the hotel was booked through September). Turns out, when she said “cottage” what she meant was a living room, dining room, sitting room, sun room, kitchen, four bedroom house set apart from the rest of the hotel by manicured lawns. I’m still not sure how they managed that one but it was incredible.
We had a yummy breakfast (courtesy of some family friends who knew where we were staying and had the staff bring in over) and then headed back to my house to open some of our gifts before catching our 2 o’clock flight.
We had a slight scare on the way to the airport. Between traffic, torrential downpours, and a last minute wrong turn - I had to pull the newlywed card in the check in line and we got our boarding passes with three minutes to spare. But after breezing through security we got to our gate, running, just as they were calling our names before closing the doors. We were on our way to paradise.
And paradise it was. Oh my goodness. I knew honeymoons were wonderful - but the combined beauty of Kona Kai and new love was more than I could have ever asked for. Our resort was small and intimate, just 14 rooms nestled on a private beach on the island of Key Largo. I felt like I’d entered another world. Upon arrival we found out they’d upgraded us to a suite (“as a wedding gift from Kona Kai”) so we had a kitchen and a living room for the next week as well. With so few other guests we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Ping pong on the beach, midnight swims, kayaks in the ocean, tennis, hammocks under palm trees, and food - I can’t forget the food. Kona Kai doesn’t have a restaurant but they do have the best recommendations around. We enjoyed a week of fabulous seafood and local specialties.
I feel like these words and pictures are never going to do it justice (fyi: I left my camera in NH after the wedding so these were all taken with a disposable we bought upon arrival in FL). The pictures miss my crazy assortment of swimsuits, the beautiful sunsets, the love, the calm, and the escape to paradise that the week really was - but I hope you kind of get the idea :) It really was the perfect week.
Love,
Elisabeth

Wow, what great pictures!! It looks like it was a dream come true!!
How did you decide to go with that place? It seems like there are so many resorts to pick from!
I was just talking to Brandon the other day about what we wanted to do for a honeymoon. Of course, I'm all for sitting on a beach for a week, ;) but he wants to do something more adventurous like an Alaskan cruise. Hmmmm... guess we'll have to meet in the middle somehow. :)
Happy Thursday! -Jessie
